Protective glass for railways - Hammerglass

In cooperation with the Swedish Transport Authority, Hammerglass AB has manufactured a modern electrical protective roof construction to cover the overhead cables to replace the old sheet metal protective covers. The electrical shielding is designed to withstand snow and wind loads, as well as wind loads from passing trains. The hard, smooth surface treatment of Hammerglass helps dirt and dust to be washed off the roof structure in most cases by rain. The surface treatment also provides 99.96% UV protection, which means the material will not opaque, fade or change in optical quality over time.

A 12 mm LIFESAVER

Screens save lives. In the area of high-voltage and overhead lines, there is always a risk of electrical accidents resulting in serious injuries. The roof construction made of unbreakable hammered glass complies with the electrical safety guidelines for protective roof constructions for installation on bridges over railway lines. The construction blends in with its surroundings while providing a solid barrier against live wires.

  • 12 mm hammered glass mounted on a system of inclined posts attached to the side of the bridge girders are bolted
  • Solid barrier against live conductors
  • Waterproof and tamper-proof
  • Strength calculation taking into account snow and wind loads as well as wind loads from trains
  • Meets the requirements for noise barriers specified in the CE standard EN-14388
  • Execution class EXC2 or EXC3
  • Can be installed as a splash guard at level crossings

Construction and assembly

The canopy structure is made of 12mm thick Hammerglas mounted on a system of corner posts bolted to the side of the bridge edge beam. In bridge renovations or new construction projects, the corner post with base plate is mounted below the railing post. The roof construction has been fatigue calculated by simulating snow and wind loads as well as the wind load of passing trains and also meets the requirements of the noise barriers specified in CE standard EN-14388. The solution is waterproof and tamperproof and can be manufactured to EXC2 or EXC3 performance class. We are able to undertake complete works from the dismantling of existing protective structures to the installation of a new electrical protective roof in Hammerglass. Our designers provide ready-made drawings with fixing solutions as dwg files.
